Come Thou Long Expected Jesus (Advent Carol)
The Gospel According to Isaiah
Chapter 40 is the hinge point of the book of Isaiah. It contains 66 chapters – 39 then 27 so it’s almost as if Isaiah is like the whole Bible in miniature itself (Old/New Testaments). From chapter 40 on-wards it’s about the consolation of Israel: “Comfort, comfort my people” introduces how the Lord will make all things new and right. Specifically, every nation will be included when the light is revealed:
Isaiah 40:5 “the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together”
42:6 & 49:6 “a light for the nations”
50:10 “Let him who walks in darkness and has no light
trust in the name of the Lord”
52:10 “all the ends of the earth shall see
the salvation of our God”
60:3 “nations shall come to your light”
66:18 “the time is coming to gather all nations…
and they shall see my glory”
!["[the gospel] ...is momentous news. Whether it is good news or not depends on who’s hearing it and on how they’re related to the one it is telling us about.”
“Sometimes we get confused and it becomes far to easy to move from the gospel as good news - to good news is the gospel. News that you find appealing will be the news that suits you – not news that confronts and challenges you.
The danger there is that you can end up domesticating the gospel.”](https://considerjesus.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/9781906327279-true-devotion-in-search-of-authentic-spirituality-chapple-allan_2000x.jpg?w=684)
